BRCC was back in action on Saturday afternoon versus Mississippi Delta Community College. After last week's weather effected baseball and softball across the entire region, today's games were added late in the week. Baton Rouge swept the Trojans by scores of 7-2 and 5-2. The wins bring BRCC's season record to 16-14-1.
Baton Rouge used a trio of pitchers on the way to a victory in game one. Jesse Nigro started the game for the Bears and pitched four complete innings allowing one run on two hits. Preston Fondren was the first out of the pen for Baton Rouge. He also pitched four complete innings, allowing one run and one hit. Kevin Armstrong came in to close out the game in the 9th. While he did give up a single to the first batter he faced, Armstrong proceeded to strike out the next three Delta hitters to end the game.
Bears led 2-1 after three complete innings. Sophomore catcher, Steven Bright crossed the plate first for the Bears when Layton Laird hit triple too center field. Laird scored after BRCC's next batter, Zachary Zimmer, reached first on a throwing error.
BRCC would extend the lead in the sixth inning by hitting six singles off multiple Mississippi Delta pitchers. Corey Free began the onslaught for the Bears with a single. He would score from first when left-fielder, Kevin VanAsselberg, recorded a hit of his own. Cameron Burns and Steven Bright added back to back singles and BRCC led 4-1.
Still in the sixth and after a double steal, Shayne Narro increased the lead to 6-1 with a base hit right up the middle.
Laird added another RBI to his stat column when he hit a hard ground ball right up the middle and it ricochet off the pitcher's left leg. When all the damage was done, BRCC exploded for five runs in the inning and a 7-1 lead. A lead the Bears would not relinquish on the way to a victory.
BRCC found themselves trailing in game two after giving up an early run to Mississippi Delta. The Bears could not get on the board until the 4th inning when Laird and Mark Traylor led off the inning with back to back singles. Laird would later score from a sacrifice fly by Nicholas Morgan. After four innings the game was tied, 1-1.
Robert Castello started the fifth inning with a double and later scored off a throwing error by Delta's pitcher. Overall, Baton Rouge added four runs in the inning on their way to a 5-1 lead.
Game two was a two man effort on the mound for BRCC. Justin Donaldson started the game and pitched two innings, giving up one run. John Schaffer came in and finished the game for Baton Rouge. The sophomore earned the win while allowing the Trojans one run in five innings of work.
Baton Rouge hits the road on Sunday. The Bears will travel to Alabama to face Faulkner State Community College in an afternoon doubleheader.
