Bears Baseball drop a pair of games to #14 Jones College Bobcats

The Baton Rouge Bears opened their 2026 home schedule this afternoon with a doubleheader against the #14 Jones College Bobcats at Pete Goldsby Field. Unfortunately for the Bears, the Bobcats swept the doubleheader, winning both games with scores of 6-4 and 5-3.
Game One
The Bears jumped out to an early lead but were unable to hold off a late rally by the Bobcats, ultimately dropping Game One 6-4.
The Bears got on the board first with four runs in the bottom of the second inning. Mason LeBlanc drew a walk, and Cameron Washington reached base on an error. Brecken Bordelon hit into a ground out, allowing LeBlanc to score the Bears' first run of the game. Kenneth Berard then hit a single up the middle, plating Washington. Cooper Martin capped off the Bears' four-run inning with a home run to left field. After two innings, the Bears led 4-0.
Starting pitcher Tanner Cranford managed to keep the Bobcats scoreless for four innings, navigating through some tough situations on the mound. However, the Bobcats tied the game at four with four runs in the top of the fifth inning, three of which came from a three-run homer hit by S. Ainsworth to right field. The Bobcats added two more runs in the top of the sixth inning, taking a 6-4 lead over the Bears. They capitalized on a walk and a hit by pitch to score their runs in the sixth. The Bears could not respond in the sixth or seventh innings and thus dropped Game One of the doubleheader 6-4.
Tanner Cranford started on the mound for the Bears, pitching 4 innings and allowing 0 runs on 4 hits while walking 2 and striking out 4. Jayse Degruy (0.1 innings), Joshua Jensen (0.2 innings), Kyle Liner (0.2 innings), Kyle Stansbury (1.0 inning), and Conner Mayeux (0.1 innings) pitched in relief for the Bears, with Kyle Liner (0-1) being credited with the loss. C. Smith started on the mound for the Bobcats, pitching 5 innings and allowing 4 runs (0 earned) on 5 hits, while walking 3 and striking out 5. D. Lamber was credited with the victory for the Bobcats.

Game Two
The Bears struggled to deliver timely hits in the nightcap, falling to the Bobcats 5-3.
The Bobcats were the first to score, taking the lead after an error by the Bears' pitcher following back-to-back singles. In the bottom of the first inning, the Bears loaded the bases as Brecken Bordelon led off with a double to right field, followed by back-to-back walks from Kenneth Berard and Cooper Martin. Bordelon scored on a wild pitch, tying the game at 1-1.
The Bobcats responded quickly, scoring three more runs in the top of the second inning to retake the lead at 4-1. However, the Bears fought back, scoring two runs in the bottom of the second to pull within one run at 4-3. Cameron Washington led off with a walk, followed by a single to left field from Keegan Kelsey. Jayden Jackson laid down a sacrifice bunt to move the runners up 90 feet, and Kenneth Berard capped off the inning with a single to right field, bringing both Washington and Kelsey home.
The offenses from both teams fell silent over the next three innings, turning the match into a pitching duel. The Bears threatened to break the game open in the fourth inning, loading the bases with a double from Jayden Jackson, a single from Brecken Bordelon, and an error that allowed Kenneth Berard to reach base—all with no outs. However, the Bobcats managed to escape the inning unscathed with three consecutive strikeouts.
In the sixth inning, the Bobcats added an insurance run, extending their lead to 5-3. The Bears went down in order in the sixth and seventh innings, resulting in a 5-3 loss in game two of today's doubleheader.
Evan McDaniel took the loss for the Bears, pitching four innings and allowing four runs (one earned) on seven hits, while walking three and striking out six. Grant Porche pitched three innings in relief for the Bears. Canyon Reeves earned the victory for the Bobcats in relief.

With this pair of losses, the Bears fall to 0-5, while the Bobcats improve to 5-1 on the season. Jones leads the all-time series with 44 wins and 14 losses against Baton Rouge.
