Bears lose a heartbreaker at home to Holmes

The Baton Rouge Bears faced off against the Holmes Community College Bulldogs this evening in a Region 23 contest at the Bonne Sante Wellness Center. The game was closely contested and came down to a last-second shot by the Bulldogs, which gave them a two-point victory, 72-70.
The first half was dominated by a fast-paced back-and-forth style of play from both teams. Within the first ten minutes, the game featured three ties and five lead changes. The Bulldogs managed to pull away, achieving their largest lead of nine points at 37-28 with three minutes left in the half. The Bears received solid offensive contributions from their bench during the first half, particularly from Amir Abdul-Rauf, Bryce Coleman, and Noah Whitehead. At halftime, the Holmes Bulldogs led by seven points, 42-35.
Emerging from the locker room with a new lineup, the Bears forced the Bulldogs into several turnovers, which helped them launch an 11-3 run that saw them take a one-point lead at 46-45 with 16 minutes remaining. Chad Jones hit a jumper, giving the Bears their first lead since the first half. For the next five minutes, both teams exchanged baskets and leads, with Amir Abdul-Rauf tying the game at 54 following a steal and layup with 11:29 left on the clock. Neither team held a lead greater than three points during this stretch, with both squads effectively trading baskets and defensive stops.
As the game approached the final five minutes, it was tied at 63. The last moments of the game saw three more ties, with the final one occurring with 1:12 left when Holmes made one of two free throws to level the score at 70. The Bears had two opportunities to regain the lead, but a missed shot and a turnover allowed Holmes to take possession with 27.4 seconds remaining. Trey Alexander hit a jumper from the right side with 3.0 seconds left, giving the Bulldogs a 72-70 edge. The Bears had a chance to tie the game, but their final shot bounced off the rim, resulting in a heartbreaking loss.
With this victory, the Bulldogs improved their record to 3-1, while the Bears fell to 2-3 for the season. Holmes leads the all-time series with 18 wins to 2 losses against Baton Rouge.
