Baton Rouge, LA
The Baton Rouge Bears faced a tough challenge this evening against the #13 Angelina College Roadrunners in the Bonne Sante Wellness Center. The Bears fought hard until the end, but it wasn't enough. The Roadrunners defeated the Bears 52-49 in their second-ever matchup in the program's history.
In the first half, the Roadrunners jumped out to a quick 7-0 lead with 16:53 remaining. The Bears responded with an 8-2 run to pull within one, making the score 9-8 with 12:23 on the clock. Although the Bears had several opportunities to score in the early minutes, many shots rimmed out. For the next five minutes, both teams switched up their defensive schemes, which kept the opposing offenses off-balance. The first half was characterized by strong defensive play, resulting in a low-scoring battle between the two clubs. The Bears took a two-point lead when Chad Jones hit a three-pointer from the top of the key as the shot clock was winding down, making it 21-19 with 3:50 remaining. The Roadrunners fought back to tie the game at 23 with 2:12 left in the half. The Bears closed out the half on a 5-2 run, taking a 28-25 lead into halftime.
The early part of the second half mirrored the first, with both clubs continuing to engage in a defensive struggle and maintaining a low scoring pace. Neither team held a lead greater than four points during the first ten minutes of the half. The Roadrunners tied the game at 40 after converting one of two free throws with 9:22 remaining. The Bears quickly retook the lead with a three-pointer by Nicholas Womack. However, the Roadrunners responded, tying the game at 45 with five minutes left. The Roadrunners then took a two-point lead, which they would not relinquish, after the Bears fouled them on a three-point attempt. The Roadrunners made two out of three free throws, taking a 47-45 lead. The Bears fought back, but a jumper in the lane by the Roadrunners with just 13.2 seconds left sealed the 52-49 victory.
Chad Jones led the Bears with 11 points. The Bears had two players in double figures: Jones and Bryce Coleman, who added 10 points and 8 rebounds off the bench. Jaden Spears led the Roadrunners with 12 points, supported by his teammate Sells, who also finished in double figures.
With this loss, the Bears fell to 3-5, while the Roadrunners improved to 6-0 on the season. Angelina leads the all-time series with two wins and no losses over Baton Rouge.
