Lady Bears fall to Mississippi Gulf Coast

The Baton Rouge Lady Bears concluded the 15th Annual Lady Bears Classic with a matchup against Region 23 opponents, the Mississippi Gulf Coast Lady Bulldogs, at the Bonne Sante Wellness Center. The Lady Bulldogs outlasted the Lady Bears, earning a slim victory of 57 to 54.
In the opening minutes of the first quarter, it appeared that the Lady Bulldogs would run away with the game. Gulf Coast scored the first eight points, taking an early lead. Shelcie LeBlanc got the Lady Bears on the board by hitting one of two free throws with three minutes remaining in the quarter. The Lady Bears found their offensive rhythm, finishing the quarter on an 8-4 run, but still trailed 12-9 at the end of the first quarter.
In the second quarter, the Lady Bears capitalized on inconsistent play and turnovers by the Lady Bulldogs to get closer. Koi Ursin scored seven points during an 11-8 run, tying the game at 20 with four minutes left before the half. However, the Lady Bulldogs responded with three straight three-pointers, extending their lead to nine points with two minutes remaining in the half, making the score 29-20. Gulf Coast entered halftime with a nine-point advantage, 31-22.
During the third quarter, the Lady Bulldogs pulled ahead, establishing a 16-point lead midway through, 42-26. The Lady Bears closed the quarter strong, finishing on an 8-4 run to pull within 12 points at 46-34.
In the fourth quarter, the Lady Bears began to chip away at Gulf Coast's lead. After several tight possessions, and with an increased defensive presence and improved offensive strategy, the Lady Bears pulled within nine points at 50-41. They closed the gap further, reaching within three points at 54-51 when Patience Johnson completed a three-point play with two minutes left in the game. Cambrieion Link then drove coast to coast for a layup, narrowing the score to 55-54 with just 36 seconds remaining. The Lady Bears had a chance to tie late in the game, but Shelcie LeBlanc's shot in the lane missed, and no foul was called. The Lady Bulldogs sealed the victory with two late free throws, finishing the game at 57-54.
With the loss, the Lady Bears fell to 0-2, while the Lady Bulldogs improved to 2-0. Nautica Bouie led the Lady Bulldogs in scoring with 16 points, while Emani Young led the Lady Bears with 16 points as well. Both teams had two student-athletes score in double figures.

The Lady Bears will hit the road for the first time this season, traveling to Scooba, Mississippi, on Monday, November 3, to take on the East Mississippi Lady Lions at 5:30 PM.
